Plowshare Farms Awarded Small Farm Grant

Plowshare Farms writes:

“We—and our pigs—are loving our new grant-funded pig feeders and waterers. Before installing our pig feeders, we were constantly lugging feed out to our pigs, and rotating them less often than we would like. With our new pig feeders, which we mounted to pallets for easy transport, we are able to refill the pig feed every five or six days, saving us lots of labor hours. With the feeder and waterers mounted on pallets, we are able to rotate pastures more efficiently, keeping pasture damage down, and increasing the health of our animals. One unexpected improvement is reduced stress in the pigs at feeding time. Now that our pigs have access to free-choice feed at all times, there is no “feeding time,” and animals therefore don’t need to compete to find space at the trough. This results in less feed being spilled, and a less stressful environment for our animals. In short, thanks to the generous grant from the Bucks County Foodshed Alliance, we are able to raise our animals better with fewer inputs, it’s a win-win.”
