BCFA was excited to bring back our popular educational workshops in 2023. Our workshops were attended by over 150 participants.

 

Bone Broth with Chef Casey

Our season kicked off in March with a wonderful and interactive presentation by Chef Casey Kopinski of The Helpful Foodie about bone broth. Casey demonstrated how to make delicious and nutritious bone broth from locally sourced bones.

 

Growing Berries in Your Backyard with Adam Dusen

Next up, Adam Dusen of Hundred Fruit Farm led our next workshop in April. Adam explained how to select, plant, and care for all sorts of delicious berries that can be grown in your own yard! He discussed the usual berries and went beyond with currants and gooseberries, josta berries and elderberries.

 

Cutting Costs in Your Garden with Heather Guidice

In May, we got gardeners ready with a workshop about gardening tips and tricks with HHeather Guidice of Kona Compost and BCFA Directors Susan Pierson and Robin Hoy. Participants learned how to make compost, benefits of native plants, how to propagate their own plants, and more! 

 

 

Shari RossmannPasture Raised Nutrition 

Following a break for our summer farm tours, our workshops resumed in September with a fascinating talk by BCFA Director Shari Rossman about the benefits of grass fed beef. Shari laid out why its worth the extra cost for pasture raised for both your health and the environment.

 

 

Putting Your Garden to Bed

Heather Guidice of Kona Compost and BCFA Directors Susan Pierson and Robin Hoy combined forces again to share some important tips for putting your garden (both vegetable and native perennials) to bed for the winter season.

 

 

Fermentation

Our final workshop of the year commenced with a demonstration on how to ferment vegetables at home with BCFA President Susan Pierson. Susan shared how to turn simple ingredients of salt and fresh vegetables can turn into fermented delights! Everyone made a jar to bring home.
