Bucks County Foodshed Alliance (BCFA) began offering Small Farm Grants to farmers in the Bucks County region in 2019. The grant aims to provide funds to local farmers to make capital and other improvements supporting the farms’ long term health. It prioritizes farms that employ sustainable agricultural practices. BCFA is pleased to have awarded a grant to Morgan Creek Farms in Quakertown.
About the Farm:
Morgan Creek Farms is a diversified farm located in Quakertown, raising pastured pork and organically grown produce, focusing on sustainable and regenerative practices, and animal welfare. It is co-owned by husband-and-wife duo, Adam and Steph, and solely operated by Steph.Â
The farrow-to-finish hog operation occupies 3 acres of previously unmanageable, semi-forested land, producing about 6 litters annually. The farm strives to provide high-quality, nutrient-dense pork products to its local community via direct-to-consumer sales and one retail market. Products include half and whole hogs, individual retail cuts, and weaned piglets.
Vegetable production occupies under 1 acre and a greenhouse, serving 25 members for a 22-week CSA, and general public for on-farm sales.
Adam and Steph have also revived the property and its infrastructure, and rezoned as a 500-capacity wedding and event venue. Farm products are utilized at all events.
The farm’s production and community base are well established and accomplished, but improvements to accessibility for customers are needed. Outfitting a welcoming, aesthetically inviting, and easy-to-shop on-farm store is the next logical step in increasing visibility and improving sales—both for the long-term viability of the farm, and for creating a much needed local, organic market for Quakertown consumers.
About the Grant Award:
Morgan Creek Farms is using their Small Farm Grant to purchase two glass fronted refrigeration units. These units will help showcase fresh vegetables and meat products, improving both product visibility and food safety, thereby enhancing the customer experience, making it easier for customers to view and purchase products, which is crucial for building a loyal customer base.
Morgan Creek Writes:Â
I would be remiss if I didn’t take this opportunity to mention the contributions from Bucks County Foodshed Alliance, who granted me the money to purchase two glass display cases for the store. With their support, I was able to acquire a glass freezer for all of our frozen pork products and locally made sourdough baked goods, as well as a glass refrigerator for our vegetables and charcuterie and locally made cheeses. Previously, without these two cases, customers were only able to choose items from a written list, whereas now, you are able to see every products and choose your items for yourself! This has greatly improved your shopping experience, my store operations, and sales overall. If you are looking for local organizations to donate to, consider donating to BCFA, who is working to help small farmers throughout Bucks County. They are really making a difference for our community’s access to local, sustainable food!
